Provisioning

Provisioning is a challenge for cruising sailboats.

  • Over the last 20 years, grocery stores have gotten larger and moved out of harbor areas to more suburban locations. This leaves very few where one can just walk from a dinghy landing to provision and easily carry items back to the boat.
  • Maine and its variety of harbors and anchorages add additional challenges for the short-term visiting cruiser.
  • Provisioning opportunities based on the personal experience of many cruisers are provided in the two Tables below: One by our Cruise Ports of Call and another covering the mid-cost Maine area.
  • There is public transportation available in Boothbay Harbor and at Somes Sound, MDI.
  • Uber is available in some places - but a bit thin.
  • Taxis are usually an option.

"Local Knowledge" from fellow Corinthians who live in the Cruise Area.

Lauren Cosgrove
Tom and I live in Camden. Some comments on the provisioning issues:
1. Camden’s Hannaford is about 2 miles out of town and I am happy to pick up cruise participants at the town dock and ferry them there and back for groceries. We can work out a schedule, our SUV holds 3 passengers and lots of cargo and we can make multiple trips
2 . Camden’s French and Braun market is 0.1 miles from town dock, nice variety, very expensive
3. Stonewall Kitchens is  not a grocery store, and sells only fancy jellies, sauces and pancake mixes. It is a gift shop

In Acadia, participants can take the Island Explorer bus to Bar Harbor, which has a large and well stocked Hannafords on Cottage Street

There are laundry facilities at Lyman Morse in Camden and at Dysarts Marina in Acadia at SW Harbor (the latter reachable by the Island Explorer bus)

Please feel free to Email or call me if you have any question,
