Rockland Harbor & Mooring Field

Cruise / Fleet Activity:

  • Cruise from Seal Bay, Vinyl Haven Island to Rockland

Venue:

  • The venue for the Cruise Wrapup Dinner will be at the Apprentice Shop located on the waterfront North of the Ferry Dock. The Apprentice Shop Satellite View of The Apprentice Shop & Waterfront

Cruise Wrap-up Awards Dinner:

  • Location: The Apprentice Shop, Rockland ME. 44.11117N-69.10716W
    • See the following two charlets for information regarding the location of The Apprenticeshop, Rockland Yacht Club, Journeys End Marina and the Rockland Public Landing.
    • There is a floating dock at the Apprenticeshop for your dinks but be sure to leave adequate length when you tie up as the dock is small and it will be crowded.
  • Event Layout & Timeline:
    • 5:00-6:00 Cocktail Hour with Cash Bar: at the Apprentice Shop (location noted on charlet)
    • 6:00-7:30 Dinner: Buffet style in the lower level of Steelhouse South
    • 7:30-8:00 Presentation & Dessert Set Up
    • 8:00- Dessert and Coffee and take-out containers for guests Dinner and Awards.
  • Dress is casual but it does get cool in the evenings so be sure to dress accordingly.

Moorings:

  • There is a large mooring field with rental moorings available
  • Contact Harbormaster for mooring reservations
  • Rockland Landings Marina
    • 13 moorings for rent
  • Journey's End Marina
    • The office is 207-594-0400 year around. 
    • They have a number of moorings but suggest that you book early as they fill up.  They have about a dozen moorings but also rent those that are on a season rental as they become available.

    • Tthe cost is $50/day and $250 a week.     They monitor VHF 9 & 18. 
  • Johansen Boat Works
    • A small number of moorings are available. They are $35/night and are also available for longer periods. 
    • Call for details.  Miriah at 207-790-0682 (cell).  Miriah says call now, moorings are going fast. 
    • If you are chartering through the office, moorings are included in the charter fee for the duration of your charter.
  • Rockland Yacht Club
    • Has moorings moorings for $40/night and $400 for a month.
    • They can be reached at cell phone 207-233-2800 or on VHF 9.   At this writing, May 20, 2019, that is the only phone and it plays a recording that the 2018 season has ended. 

Launch Service:

  • For those who choose to be on a mooring, launch Service will be available from the Rockland Yacht Club. 
  • Fare is $6 one way.   The launch generally runs from 0800 to 2000 but will run later for us. 
  • They can be reached at cell phone 207-233-2800 or on VHF 9.  

Anchorage

  • The harbor is large and has good protection provided by the outlying seawall marked by its iconic lighthouse at the S end.
  • There is a large area noted on the chart for anchoring
  • Be sure that you have adequate scope for 30-35’ at high tide.
  • Note: SV Onward has anchored many times in the area just outside (to E) of the Harbormaster's mooring field . It is a convenient anchorage with great holding.

Dockage

Dinghy Dock

  • Located at the SW corner of Harbormaster Pier.
    • The floats can be crowded.
    • Use longer painters.
    • Register your tender with the Harbormaster Office

Navigation

  • The harbor has a wide entrance with a long breakwater. The approach is straight forward.
  • Tides:
    • July 27th. Tides are high in Rockland. 10’.
    • High Tide: 07:09 & 19:27
    • Low Tide: 01:00 & 13:00

Provisions & Shopping

  • Rockland is a large harbor with provisions, marine supplies and groceries within walking distance.
  • There are also a number of fine restaurants and museums worth visiting.

Things to Do

  • Farnsworth Museum. A wonderful art museum in downtown an easy stroll from dinghy docks and marinas. It has an outstanding collection of art by the Wyeth family.

Transportation:

  • Car rental: www.budget.com 800-218-7992
    • Cars can be rented, one way, at Budget Rent a car at the Owl's Head airport. One way rentals from there generally do not include a drop off charge. For example, in a recent search on their site: $62 to New London and $150 to Stamford.
  • Bus service to Portland: Greyhound Lines: www.greyhound.com 800-846-0754
    • There is a single Greyhound departure each day from Rockland ME, departing from the Ferry Terminal, to Portland. It departs at 8:50AM and arrives in Portland at 11:00. It stops at a number of places along the way. Cost, about $25. That same run also goes to Boston and arrives at 1:25pm.
  • Uber / Lyft
    • Rockland has a few drivers (max 4) but as they are second jobs, they are only around at night.
